The British Dental Association (BDA) has responded strongly to The General Dental Council (GDC) chair Bill Moyes’ address to the FGDPUK at its Malcolm Pendlebury 2014 Lecture last week. The Association described it as ‘significant’ and indicates that the GDC will ‘substantially broaden its areas of interest and operation’, duplicating the activities of ‘other bodies properly charged with those responsibilities.’

Bill Moyes, chair of General Dental Council (GDC) has delivered the Malcolm Pendlebury Lecture at the Faculty of General Dental Practice. He said that the volume of patients complaints about poor dentistry is likely to increase. At the same time the GDC will be under pressure to deal with more fitness to practise cases.

New survey data, published by the British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF), reveals almost one in five (18 per cent) would cancel their dental appointment to go to the pub, order a takeaway, buy clothes, go to the cinema or go bowling. BDHF Chief Executive, Nigel Carter, urges people to discover why placing social life ahead of regular visits to the dentist isn't a smart move.

During May, the Denplan events team were joined by 25 valiant dentists on an epic nine-day cycle ride. The 908-mile challenge took them from the northeast tip of Scotland, John O’Groats, to the furthest southerly part of England in Land’s End – all in the name of raising over £30,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Two dental professionals were honoured in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Dr Selina Master was appointed MBE. She is national dental lead - Virgin Care and received the award for services to vulnerable people and improving oral health. Also made an MBE was Tony Griffin, dental technician, for services to dental technology.

Tony Jacobs took the chair at the 63rd Annual Conference of Local Dental Committees held in Manchester on June 13. In addition to motions, John Milne, Chair of GDPC, Barry Cockcroft, Chief Dental Officer, Eddie Crouch and Alisdair McKendrick initiated debates. The conference was preceded by dinner the previous evening.

The General Dental Council (GDC) says it is ‘extremely disappointed’ at lack of Bill on professional regulation in Queen's Speech. GDC Chief Executive and Registrar Evlynne Gilvarry has written to all registrants and said: “The absence of a Bill in today's Queen's Speech which would enable changes that are critical to patient protection is extremely disappointing.”

The General Dental Council (GDC) has taken action against three dental technicians in recent weeks. Luis Fairman who created the infamous metal teeth for James Bond villain Jaws was fined £500 at Bodmin Magistrates Court for claiming to be a dental technician, although not registered. Frank Mulholland from Liverpool, was fined £2,500 for a similar offence. Finally Paul Kettle from Bolton has been erased from the register for misconduct.

The Department of Health (DH) has launched an ‘engagement exercise’ on the way forward for reform of the GDP contract. It is particularly aimed at the dental profession and wider dental community, from whom comments are invited. These will influence the next stage of reform, which is expected to start during 2015/16, and will see a limited number of practices testing one or more variants of possible new systems. The consultation runs until the end of July 2014 and the relevant papers can be found at:
