The General Dental Council (GDC) has released details of draft plans to change guidelines about the temporary registration of dentists. An online consultation on the issue is now open and closes on 22 July 2011. Temporary registration allows overseas dentists to practise dentistry in the UK in supervised posts for training, teaching or research purposes only and for a limited period.

The Audit Commission has published a health briefing suggesting that the NHS could save up to £500 million a year by carrying out fewer ineffective or inefficient treatments. These include orthodontics and the removal of wisdom teeth. The Audit Commission has developed an online tool that allows the user to identify savings opportunities.

The Government has now officially announced that the new contract pilots will start in ‘the summer’. 62 practices will trial new ideas based on registration, capitation and quality. “For the first time dentists will be paid for the quality of the treatment they give rather than the number of treatments providedâ€, Health Minister Lord Howe said..

Norman Lamb MP a close adviser to Nick Clegg has threatened to resgign unless changes are made to the proposed overhaul of the NHS. He said the plans posed a major ‘financial risk’ to the NHS, and patient care could suffer. He is currently the Lib Dem leader’s chief political adviser but before the election was the party's health spokesman in opposition.

Jerry Read, Head of Oral Health and Dental Education at the Department of Health, was honoured by the Faculty of Dental Surgery and the Faculty of General Dental Practice at their joint Diplomates Ceremony held on 1 April 2011, receiving a Special Service Award to recognise his outstanding contribution to the faculties and to dentistry as a whole.

According to the latest Adult Dental Health Survey just over a quarter (26 per cent) of adults say the type of dental treatment they have chosen in the past has been affected by the cost of the treatment. In addition almost a fifth (19 per cent) said that they have delayed dental treatment for the same reason. There is some overlap between the two groups.

The Secretary of State for Health, Andrew Lansley, is to address British Dental Conference and Exhibition at Manchester’s Central Convention Complex on Thursday May 19. Mr Lansley is expected to participate in a question and answer session following his address, which replaces the previously-advertised appearance by Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State Lord Howe.
