Ivoclar Digital attracts at Dentistry Show and DTS

Ivoclar Digital attracts at Dentistry Show and DTS

The Dentistry Show and Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) 2017 saw Ivoclar Vivadent UK & Ireland showcase their new brand, Ivoclar Digital, to the British market for the first time since it’s official launch at IDS, Cologne, in March.

Thanks to their prime location with clinical and technical stands adjacent to one another, Ivoclar Vivadent were able to demonstrate that their new digital products will provide both dentists and dental technicians with state-of-the-art professional expertise throughout the entire digital process journey.

The main attraction and making its debut as Ivoclar Vivadent's first chairside mill for clinical use, the PrograMill One. The world’s smallest 5-axis milling machine combines industrial manufacturing quality with high precision and modern design. In the innovative 5-axis turn-milling technique, the workpiece rotates around the tool at a constant feed and the tool never leaves the block, ensuring short milling times and minimal tool wear.

Various validated processing strategies are available for different materials and indications; the unit has been particularly developed for milling IPS e.max CAD and the new innovative IPS e.max ZirCAD. The machine’s wireless capabilities allow it to be operated from any location within close proximity with the help of a special app for tablets and smartphones; its optical status display shows the current status of the machine. PrograMill One is coordinated with intra-oral scanners and Design Studio software from 3Shape.

The PrograMill One will once again be demonstrated in June at Ivoclar Vivadent’s annual ICDE event, exclusively alongside the new PrograMill PM7 which will be presented to laboratories as a future-proof solution for the digital manufacture of prosthetic restorations.

The consistent hub of visiting dental professionals were assisted by Ivoclar Vivadent’s attending product specialists across both stands, who provided demonstrations on the new and existing ranges available, as well as special offers and expert advice.

Ivoclar Vivadent’s Technical & Digital Product Manager, Leo James, who was on hand over the course of the two days commented, “ since the launch of Ivoclar Digital at IDS we anticipated that DTS (Dentistry) would be the perfect platform to showcase Ivoclar Vidadent's latest digital innovations to the UK’s dental industry.”

“We’re delighted with the enthusiasm that the Ivoclar Digital concept has been met with, overall the show has proven itself to be an invaluable lead & sales generator for us and I’m looking forward to seeing the new portfolio being integrated into the market further”.

Listening, talking and networking:- Dentistry Show 2017

Listening, talking and networking:- Dentistry Show 2017

We enjoyed an extremely busy couple of days at the Dentistry Show on Friday and Saturday in Birmingham. This year we didn’t have a stand, so we did a lot of walking, talking and listening of course…...

A few initial thoughts and products that caught the eye:-

The Full Picture

In a room of a few thousand people, it always intrigues me the different impressions people get from the show. “Fantastic show”, “our stand has been so busy” “selling loads of gear” and then you move about 3 feet to the next stand and the reaction is totally different “waste of time”, “not as busy as last year” “this part of the room isn’t getting any footfall” so when stepping back and looking at the full picture, I reckon it is somewhere in the middle. The show was certainly busy but it is not for everyone.

Takeaway - it is not always about following the crowd. This kind of show works for some companies but not all.

Closer Still

Closer Still Media, have built an amazing business, which is demonstrated by the fact that the show attracts a huge number of exhibitors, speakers and visitors. As you will know from previous blogs, GDPUK have not always had the best experience at the Dentistry Show but we must say that it has a great spirit, atmosphere and 2 days seems a perfect amount of time.

Well done to all the Dentistry Show team and the wider Closer Still Media team which is now over 200 people strong. They obviously understand the formula to produce extremely successful events.

Internet of Things

Last year we reported on Oral-B’s move into connected toothbrushes and now Philips have followed with the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart which not only is incredibly smart with its matt black handle, black brush head and charge in glass technology, it also uses connected technology to inspire and motivate patients to take better care of their oral health. I believe it will be available to consumers in the next few months. Great to see dentistry leading the way in connected devices and improving oral-health at the same time.

Good to Great

“Good to Great” is a journey to greater business prosperity for dentists, which has been underpinned in the last 12 months by the introduction of SoE’s Customer Success Programme. (Software of Excellence). The Good to Great Challenge encourages dentists to think more clearly about how they can optimise their performance and maximise revenue and provides a vehicle by which dentists can track and follow the progress of likeminded dental practices. More information available here - http://www.g2gchallenge.com/

Will be interesting to see how many practices get involved in this challenge and what affect it has on their practice over the 12 months.

Social

The show is great for networking which is demonstrated by the thousands of people attending and the huge queues at the Starbucks just outside hall 5! I really enjoyed this element of the show, fantastic to catch up with so many people from all areas of the profession.

A few other mentions and thoughts

  • The Simply Health juice drinks were delicious and perfect after a few beers on the Friday evening. I am sure anyone who attended the Dental Awards or the Dental Circle party also found those drinks refreshing :)
  • Prem at Quick Straight Teeth certainly caught the eye but I know this has been covered elsewhere on social media :)
  • The dental industry certainly seemed positive overall, digital is growing. Innovation isn't always the quickest in dentistry compared to other sectors but some of the options and resources available to a dentist just starting their dental practice journey are endless.
  • The 3M intraoral mobile tablet scanner is extremely clever and could be excellent for interaction with your patient. Info here.

Thanks for reading and hopefully see you at the BDA Conference in a couple of weeks. Get in touch if you would like to meet up or need some advice on the best restaurants in Manchester.

Elaine Halley, Chair of the Aesthetic Dentist Conference - The Dentistry Show 2016

The Dentistry Show

For dental professionals of all experience levels, interests and career aspirations, The Dentistry Show facilitates the development of clinical and business skills within a dynamic and fun environment. The 2016 event will once again bring you an array of lectures, hands-on workshops and on-stand learning throughout the trade floor, ensuring diverse learning opportunities for the whole team.

Among the highlights of the next show will be the Aesthetic Dentist Conference, Chaired by Dr Elaine Halley. Here, she gives a taste of what delegates can expect from the highly anticipated lecture programme:

“I’m very excited to present this great line-up of speakers who’ll be exploring a broad variety of subjects. We will show how the digital age is now well within the realms of the GDP who has an interest in aesthetic dentistry. It doesn’t matter how much previous experience delegates have with modern digital technologies, or indeed whether they have access to advanced CAD/CAM equipment in their practice – we will demonstrate how anyone can start to integrate the digital workflow.

“Our outstanding speakers will include Florin Cofar visiting from Romania, who will be discussing CAD/CAM and digital smile design and how it can be used in general practice. Roberto Spreafico will take this further by looking at CAD/CAM relating to treatment of the posterior teeth. In my own lecture, I will consider how we can capture effective digital images and utilise them for enhanced treatment planning.

“In contrast, Professor Trevor Burke will be speaking about the management of more complex cases, focusing on the treatment planning stages and offering practical hints and tips to help improve this stage of treatment. Ian Kerr, known for his work with resin-bonded composites, will also explore the advanced restorative dentistry that can be aided with CAD/CAM solutions. Renowned speakers Didier Dietschi, Finlay Sutton and Louis MacKenzie will complete the line-up, ensuring the entire topic spectrum is covered.”

Alongside the Aesthetic Dentist Conference, The Dentistry Show 2016 will host a myriad of additional features covering all fields of dentistry including the GDP Theatre, EndoLounge, PerioLounge, CORE CPD Theatre and STO Lounge. What’s more, the trade floor is expected to stage more than 400 leading dental manufacturers and suppliers, each displaying cutting-edge innovations and many will provide on-stand learning for those interested in honing their knowledge of products and treatment concepts.

“The benefit of The Dentistry Show comes from the amount of thought and effort that goes into putting the programme together, ensuring each conference stream is relevant for those within the appropriate field,” concludes Elaine. “Delegates can trust that the speaker line-ups and topics are always different year on year, enabling them to access a wide spectrum of educational opportunities.

“The event is also very well supported by the trade, so delegates can learn about materials and equipment and then speak to the manufacturers directly. This combination of education and access to the trade is fantastic.”

New Innovative Design - DTS 2016

New Innovative Design - DTS 2016

Andrea Johnson is an orthodontic technician working at the Royal Derby Teaching Hospital and is Vice Chair of the Orthodontic Technicians Association (OTA). She is excited to be speaking at the brand new Orthodontic Technician’s Seminar Stream at The Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) 2016 where she will deliver a presentation entitled “The Unbreakable Herbst Appliance”. Here she speaks with enthusiasm about her seminar:

“I saw the new unbreakable Herbst appliance in Italy a few months ago and I’m really excited because it's a brilliant design and I want to tell everyone all about it.

“During the seminar I will be describing the innovative new design of the appliance. The original Herbst appliance is very effective for a variety of different problems, primarily where the mandible needs to be postured forward. However, the way the components sit in the acrylic of the appliance make it very prone to breakages and so it can be unreliable. The new design of appliance that I will discuss is almost unbreakable; it has exactly the same function but it operates in a different way and is not as flimsy and fragile.

“I will cover the benefits of the new design and the reasons why technicians would want to use the appliance. The design stage will be incorporated and technicians will take away knowledge about how it can be used and also where components can be sourced. This way, technicians can order in the parts and try it out in their own lab.

“I imagine that a lot of technicians will be interested in the new design because it is not just applicable to one specific discipline. Undoubtedly, the Herbst appliance would be used more by orthodontic technicians dealing with specified cases but prosthodontic and denture technicians may also use it occasionally.

“I will join many other presenters throughout the DTS educational programme who are excited about being able to talk to technicians from across the disciplines. Having that cross-over of knowledge is valuable because the conversations, points and questions that arise offer a range of different perspectives that we ourselves may not have considered.

“I think that the co-location of The Dentistry Show and DTS does very well because it’s an exclusive arrangement. Dentists often visit the DTS area to source laboratory services and products, or to seek advice on various techniques and materials. It’s a mutually enjoyable exchange; technicians can also visit stands at The Dentistry Show to see what clinicians are using, which helps us to offer a better service for them in return.

“A lot of the other shows cater more for the clinical side of dentistry. To have a venue with a lab-dedicated area featuring a range of lab-based products and services, as well as lectures designed specifically to interest them, is extremely beneficial. I’ve seen other shows try this approach, of course, but DTS seems to be the best.”

To attend Andrea’s seminar and to take advantage of the wealth of educational and networking opportunities, book your ticket for DTS 2016 today.

DTS 2016 will be held on Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd April 2016 at the NEC Birmingham, co-located with The Dentistry Show.

Dr Finlay Sutton at The Dentistry Show 2016

Dr Finlay Sutton at The Dentistry Show 2016

Dr Finlay Sutton will be among the outstanding speaker line-up presenting the Aesthetic Dentist Conference at The Dentistry Show 2016. Keen to demonstrate that removable prosthodontics remains a viable treatment option, even with advances in dental implantology, he will be discussing “The 7 Secrets to Successful Removable Prosthodontics”.

“I will deliver a very practical and clinically-focused presentation, exploring my seven secrets for the creation of beautiful dentures with optimal function,” he says. “Using a selection of case studies, photos and videos, I will show how I have worked with my on-site dental technician, Rowan Garstang, to produce removable dental prostheses with exceptional function and aesthetics.

“For those attending my lecture, you can expect to pick up some practical tips to help you make superb impressions and maximise retention for both partial and complete dentures. You’ll also see how to determine optimal tooth positioning when designing the prosthesis, ensuring that it is always age appropriate.

“I love coming to The Dentistry Show and have been to the last three events. There really is something at the show for everyone involved in dentistry and dental technology. It is a brilliant place to learn new dental techniques, see new products and materials and keep up-to-date with the latest technological advances in dentistry, so that we can improve what we provide for our patients. In addition, it is a great opportunity to meet up with friends and colleagues.”

Led by Elaine Halley, Chair of the educational programme, confirmed speakers will be Professor Trevor Burke, Didier Dietschi, Florin Cofar, Roberto Spreafico, Louis MacKenzie and Ian Kerr, discussing a wide range of relevant topics from CAD/CAM technologies and the digital workflow to management of complex cases and direct composites.

Technology and education: Improving patient care - Dr Amit Patel and Donna Schembri

Technology and education: Improving patient care

Speaking at EuroPerio8 on Thursday June 4th, Dr Amit Patel and Donna Schembri explored the concept of ‘Seeing the Unseen’ - Utilising Fluorescent Technology for Optimal Periodontal Care.

With the two speakers covering the subjects of diagnosis, communication and the treatment of periodontal disease and peri-implantitis, the message was clear: innovation changes products and progress changes behaviours.

Studies have shown that 40 - 80% of information is forgotten immediately by patients[i]. Donna therefore noted that if you want your patients to be better informed about periodontal disease, you need to find better ways to enhance their understanding. By replacing dental jargon with emotive wording and replacing negative and daunting connotations of treatment with positivity, this has the potential to empower and motivate your patients - increasing your chance of success and improving overall patient care.

With comfort and increased effectiveness at the forefront of innovation, Donna and Amit firmly believe that by using the right technology and products you can minimise the presence of plaque on teeth and dental implants: achieving the ultimate goal of tooth loss prevention.

Using photos and videos for examples, the fluorescence protocol was put to the test with demonstrations of how pioneering products can be utilised to treat and maintain periodontal disease effectively. Both speakers also highlighted the need for

continued focus on educating patients about the differences between supragingival cleaning, subgingival cleaning, root planning, use of medication and x-ray and follow up treatment. They need to be informed of the benefits of prophylaxis as well; those being tartar removal, aesthetics and fresher breath.

Examples of cutting-edge products mentioned included Acteon’s Newtron P5xs ultrasonic generator, the Air n Go easy airpolisher and the Soprocare - which utilises state of the art photonics technologies. With products like these, patients can reap the benefits of accurate detection, quick visual follow up, comfort, oral hygiene education and complete removal of plaque and stains with minimally invasive treatment.

As the question and answering session post lecture depicted, the main concerns highlighted among professionals included patient’s lack of understanding. “It is a relationship,” Dr Amit Patel explained, “Give them the tools to do it themselves and lead them in the right direction.”

It would seem then that the answer to better patient care is twofold: improve patient understanding and rapport to empower patients to look after themselves and utilise technology to see better and treat faster.

On Saturday June 6th, Ziv Mazor examined the concept of Minimal Invasive Surgery Utilizing Piezo Surgical Device - Optimizing Biological and Functional Outcome in the Posterior Maxilla, once again sponsored by Acteon.

In order to explore invasive surgery, Mazor first identified potential obstacles that can occur during treatment.

He noted that implant placement in the atrophic posterior maxilla often causes complications due to the quality and volume of the bone that is available. With the height and width of the residual ridge being affected by post-extraction resorption patterns, physical trauma, periodontal disease and pneumatisation of the sinus, he highlighted that longer and wider implants are needed to enhance long-term survival.

Research points towards infected sockets being the most common cause of post-extraction complications, with a study showing a percentage of 48.7. Bleeding sockets came second with 41% and retained roots caused 10.3% of problems[ii].

Recent innovation in this area highlights that trauma to the tissues and the underling bone can be eliminated, minimising both the procedure time and post-operative complications.

With sinus lifts and osteotome techniques often being associated with higher morbidity rates and complication risks, technological advances are a revelation in achieving a reduced risk and high standard of patient care.

Mazor went on to suggest that with the use of reliable, powerful and simple products such as Piezotome® ultrasonic surgery unit from Acteon, there are fewer complications and emphasis can be instead placed on the application of autologous growth factors. By utilising the sinus lift balloon technique, patients can also benefit from the reduction of risk to damage of the Schneiderian membrane. An example of this product is the Sinus Lift Kit by Acteon, which offers the practitioner a straightforward and safe answer to the sinus lift operation.

The point of this lecture was clear: in reducing complications with the aid of innovative technology, ultimate function of patient dentition can be reached in a shorter time period and risk-free way.

Thus there is a noticeable change in the direction of periodontology. The products that are being developed are innovative and effective not just because of what they can do for professionals, but also for how they engage and empower the patient.

PerioChip® delight at EuroPerio 8

PerioChip delight at EuroPerio 8

Proud partner of the British Society of Periodontology (BSP), PerioChip® was among the Gold Sponsors of EuroPerio 8 and delighted delegates with an array of first class speakers and educational content.

Prior to the exhibition, the professional team looked forward to extolling the advantages of PerioChip®. EuroPerio 8 was a fantastic place for PerioChip® to raise awareness amongst the dental community about gum disease and its potential links to systemic illnesses such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The speakers taking to the stage at the show included: Professor Eli Machtei, Professor Arie J Van Winkelhoff and Dr Rajan Nansi.

Professor Machtei of the Rambam School of Dentistry in Israel is Clinical Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine at the Technion (Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel). His session, Guided Tissue Regeneration: When to use it, focused on periodontal regeneration and looked at how far the profession has progressed and what future research is needed in order to improve our clinical outcomes. He asked what the limitations are, and where should dentists complete or refrain from completing guided tissue regeneration.

Professor Arie J Van Winklehoff of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands is Co-owner of Laboral Diagnostics en Laboral International, a service in the field of clinical microbiology for dental professionals. His session, When should we use systemic antimicrobials? discussed the rationale behind using these drugs in treating periodontitis. It considered the recent World Health Organisation recommendations surrounding the over-prescription of antimicrobial medicines and encouraged a more evidence-based approach to the prescription of antibiotics for periodontitis.

Dr Rajan Nansi, Chair of Early Careers Group, BSP UK also spoke at the event and his session, Management of periodontitis in practice: Practical concepts, aimed to discuss the effectiveness of non-surgical periodontal therapy and explore the use of adjunctive locally applied antimicrobials in periodontal treatment.

Delegates at EuroPerio 8 could see that PerioChip® is passionate about supporting, educating and communicating with the dental community to highlight the importance of keeping gums healthy, and treating gum disease effectively without the risk associated with using antibiotics.

This is where the advantages of this wafer thin biodegradable insert really come into their own. By using PerioChip® you can ensure that harmful bacteria are eliminated for up to 10 days[i] and, for on-going therapy, PerioChip® suppresses the growth of bacterial flora in the treated site for up to 11 weeks, giving the all-important time needed for gum reattachment and stabilisation of the periodontium[ii].

Meeting Dental Compliance Challenges Head On - The Dentistry Show

Dental Compliance at The Dentistry Show

As one of the many new features of The Dentistry Show 2015, the Compliance Clinic attracted capacity crowds throughout the buzzing two-day event.

Hosted by Apolline, a leader in bespoke, hands-on services and solutions supporting dentists and their practice teams, the programme was designed to help delegates meet challenges of regulatory compliance head on.

Sessions were delivered by experts in their fields, with Stephen Henderson discussing dentolegal issues, Dr Jerry Watson exploring the benefits of patient feedback and Philip Newsome considering what it means to be a professional.

Delegate Dr Ann Kearney commented:

Pat Langley - CEO of Apolline

“The detail given in the Compliance Clinic is crucial and the speakers all delivered it in a very accessible manner. “People need to hear this to save themselves so much trouble. 10 out of 10 for everything.”

Pat Langley, Chair of the programme and Chief Executive of Apolline (left) added:

“The Dentistry Show was brilliant for Apolline this year. There is a considerable amount of concern in the profession at the moment related to the increasingly complex regulatory requirements. We were delighted to be able to provide help and support to both our existing members and the new members who signed up with us in their droves at the Show.”

A Perfect Platform for Innovation - Dentistry Show 2015

Dentistry Show 2015

Hundreds of new products and technologies are released within the UK dental market every year, each having undergone extensive research and development. The goal of new innovations is to improve the clinical outcome of treatment, enhance the patient experience or streamline the practitioner’s workflow, and the best of those available in fact do all three.

The difficulty comes in attempting to remain abreast of all these advancements, but for delegates at The Dentistry Show and DTS 2015, the task was made easy. The vast exhibition of more than 400 leading trade suppliers and manufacturers brought all the very latest products, materials, technologies and services to you in one place, with the experts on hand to provide demonstrations and offer bespoke advice and guidance. Whether you were looking for advanced imaging systems, cutting-edge practice management software, proven oral health care products to recommend to patients or new CAD/CAM technology for your lab, the trade floor had something to offer you.

What’s more, the exciting new Launchpad UK highlighted the newest offerings in the dental market, following global product launches at IDS Cologne only a few weeks beforehand. More than 100 fascinating new products from over 70 leading companies were featured in the exclusive Launchpad UK guide, including innovations from the likes of 3M ESPE, Acteon, Bego, Clark Dental, DENTSPLY, Henry Schein, Ivolclar Vivadent, Kerr, Nobel Biocare, Philips, Shofu and Straumann.

Aside from the innovations available to discover and try, the exhibition was also the perfect platform from which to network with professionals in various areas of dentistry. With all members of the dental team present from dentists to dental hygienists, practice managers, dental technicians and trade suppliers, this was an ideal place to create new professional relationships and strengthen existing connections.

Gillian Greig, Principal Dentist at The Private Dental Centre commented:

It’s my first time at the show and I’ve found it a brilliant place to see and buy products - you get some exclusive deals here. I’ve spent money and attended a few educational sessions, so it’s been a very successful day for me.”

Sofina Ahed, Dentist, added:

“I get something different out of this show every year. Last year was all about CPD, but I’m now planning to open my own practice so this year I’m sourcing new products, software and services. It’s been very useful to be able see the equipment and materials, speak to the different companies and get some good quotes.”

The trade exhibitors were also happy with the success of the event with comments including:

“We’ve pulled away from other shows, but this is an amazing show for us – we get loads of leads here. It attracts good quality delegates and allows us to show off our products and educate and engage with dental healthcare professionals.” – Dawn Woodward, National Sales Manager, Curaprox

“This is a much more friendly and approachable show than some of the others, which means delegates are relaxed and more open to buying. We’ve had a steady flow of people to the stand who are genuinely interested in what we have to offer. And we’ve made quite a few sales, so it’s been a very good show for us.” – Abigail Smith, Marketing, Coltene

This year’s trade show was so successful, in fact, that more than 100% of the 2015 event’s exhibition space has already been booked for 2016! With such figures, it is clear to see how The Dentistry Show and DTS are amongst the fastest growing dental events of the industry.

The 2016 event will be held on Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd April at the NEC in Birmingham. Be a part of the most exciting show in the profession and save the dates today!
